From Goodreads: “Grace and Sam share a kinship so close they could be lovers or siblings. But they also share a problem. When the temperature slips towards freezing, Sam reverts to his wolf identity and must retreat into the woods to protect his pack. He worries that eventually his human side will fade away and he will be left howling alone at the lonely moon. A stirring supernatural teen romance.”
With all the vampire and werewolf hype, thanks to Twilight, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to inflict even more of this tired topic on myself. Everyone in the blogsphere and book forums seemed to be reading/have read Shiver. I found this book at a second hand shop and decided to give it a shot. I had read the twilight series in search of all the positive feedback I had heard and was thoroughly disappointed. I didn’t have high hopes. However, this turned out to be a pretty decent read. The story flowed nicely. The characters were nicely introduced, and the plot was set. It was an easy read, and the main characters were likable and realistic (albeit a werewolf). This is part of a series, book one in The Wolves of Mercy Falls. Linger and forever are now on my To Be Read list.
The story is told in alternating narratives by both main characters, Sam and Grace. Its a tale of love and longing between girl and wolf. Graces was attacked by a pack of wolves when she was young, but one of the wolves stepped in and rescued her. Ever since that day, the white wolf with the strikingly gorgeous yellow eyes has been hanging around the back of Grace’s house, watching. Grace grew fascinated, and emotions developed for this mysterious creature. What Grace didn’t know was that this wolf was a boy, a boy named Sam. Sam and Grace met, under unfortunate circumstances. The familiarity of him, his yellow eyes, his hint of wolf smell, these were just a few things about Sam that Grace couldn’t resist. However, nothing perfect ever lasts. With the cold weather approaching, Sam risks changing back into a werewolf, and this might be his last time as a human. Love, a rabid wolf, family issues are just a few topics found in this book. This was a fun quick read about an unlikely love. Quite similar to Twilight, but with much more interesting characters.
Rating – 3/5
