From Goodreads: “Set over the course of one school year in 1986, ELEANOR AND PARK is the story of two star-crossed misfits – smart enough to know that first love almost never lasts, but brave and desperate enough to try. When Eleanor meets Park, you’ll remember your own first love – and just how hard it pulled you under.”
Most love stories are the same: a popular good looking girl falls in love with a popular good looking boy. Boring, right? But here’s the difference between Rowells’ Eleanor and Park versus other books:
- Eleanor isn’t good looking, nor popular. In fact, she doesn’t fit in to a “normal” teenage image. She’s shy, she’s awkward, her hair is fiery red and big, and her clothes are an embarrassment.
- Park isn’t your typical guy. He’s quiet and shy, and just manages to fit in to the right crowd, but fitting in isn’t everything to him.
On Eleanor’s first day of school, she enters the bus to numerous stares and unfriendly welcomes. With no one budging to let her sit, Park steps in and offers up the spot next to him. This small gesture catapults the beginning of a very awkward and adorable relationship. Initially they found each other annoying, dreading their daily meet on the bus. However, with time and a bond over comic books, something else grows between them that logic or reason couldn’t explain. It’s attraction. Unfortunately, like everything else in Eleanor’s life, nothing is easy or without it’s flaws.
Rowell writes a passionate story of young love and the many obstacles that interfere. She fills it with comic books and music, lyrics and mixtapes and family hardships. The story takes the reader on a wild roller coaster of ups and downs and emotional whirlwinds as we hope and pray that Eleanor and Park will make it.
My Thoughts: I seriously couldn’t put this book down! It was wonderful! I loved both the main characters and wanted everything to work in their favour. I NEEDED them to work, that is how invested I got in to the story! It was cute and annoying and frustrating and beautiful, all at the same time! So, yes.. this is a must read! Go. Buy. Now. And. Read!
