Title: Reconstructing Amelia

Author: Kimberly McCreight

Goodreads blurb: A stunning debut novel in which a single mother reconstructs her teenaged daughter’s life, sifting through her emails, texts, and social media to piece together the shocking truth about the last days of her life.

Litigation lawyer and harried single mother Kate Baron is stunned when her daughter’s exclusive private school in Park Slope, Brooklyn, calls with disturbing news: her intelligent, high-achieving fifteen-year-old daughter, Amelia, has been caught cheating.

Kate can’t believe that Amelia, an ambitious, levelheaded girl who’s never been in trouble would do something like that. But by the time she arrives at Grace Hall, Kate’s faced with far more devastating news. Amelia is dead.

Seemingly unable to cope with what she’d done, a despondent Amelia has jumped from the school’s roof in an act of “spontaneous” suicide. At least that’s the story Grace Hall and the police tell Kate. And overwhelmed as she is by her own guilt and shattered by grief, it is the story that Kate believes until she gets the anonymous text:

She didn’t jump.

Sifting through Amelia’s emails, text messages, social media postings, and cell phone logs, Kate is determined to learn the heartbreaking truth about why Amelia was on Grace Hall’s roof that day-and why she died.

Told in alternating voices, Reconstructing Amelia is a story of secrets and lies, of love and betrayal, of trusted friends and vicious bullies. It’s about how well a parent ever really knows a child and how far one mother will go to vindicate the memory of a daughter whose life she could not save.

Thoughts: Well that has me intrigued! I’ve been on a mystery kick lately. Just finished a couple of Gillian Flynn books (sooo good!) and wanted more more more. This one received really awesome reviews and it was just sitting on my shelf waiting to be read.. I hope I enjoy it as much as others have! Have you read it?

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: Have you read – or do you plan to read – the Shannara Chronicles by Terri Brooks? Have you been watching the new TV series based off the books? If so, what do you think?

I haven’t heard of this book but I have seen a few previews for the TV series. Not sure if I am interested in it or not. I might have a look at goodreads reviews. I would prefer to read the books before watching the series in any case!

I cannot wait to get my hands on a copy of Ransom Riggs new book Library of Souls. It comes out September 22, 2015 (right around my birthday 😉 hinthint) and I am soooooo darn excited!! I love the Miss Peregrine’s series! The mix of old photos, history, and the supernatural is beyond awesome. Anyone else excited for this book?

los

From Goodreads: “Time is running out for the Peculiar Children. With a dangerous madman on the loose and their beloved Miss Peregrine still in danger, Jacob Portman and Emma Bloom are forced to stage the most daring of rescue missions. They’ll travel through a war-torn landscape, meet new allies, and face greater dangers than ever. . . . Will Jacob come into his own as the hero his fellow Peculiars know him to be?”

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: Have you ever won a copy of a book (other than for review)? What was the book, and what were the circumstances?

I have won a couple of books. I can’t remember the titles off hand but I entered a few contests with publishers and won! I rarely win anything so this was big! haha My biggest book win ever was a Kobo! I never ever thought I would win but omfg receiving that was THE BEST EVER haha. What about you?

I recently bought one of the most anticipated/controversial reads of the year: Go Set A Watchman by Harper Lee. I love love love TKAM and so I was drawn to this book immediately – always curious to know what happened to some of my favourite characters.. but the way in which this book was brought to light is kind of a turn off. Not to mention the negative reviews that keep popping up! My “need-to-know” definitely won when it came to whether I should purchase this book or not. But now that I have it I am not sure I can pick it up right away. Did this book really kill the Atticus we all knew and loved?? Please say no! 😦

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: Are you able to read while in a vehicle (in motion)? Have you always been this way?

I can read in a moving vehicle without getting sick. I have never had any issues with it but I know so many people who can’t! My only negative about car reading is that I get super distracted by the world passing by me.. I am always finding myself staring out the window!

I am moving soon (as you have probably already gathered from some of my recent posts) and I never once considered how much of a pain it is going to be to transport my entire book collection to the new house. Coming from my parents place to the apartment was pain enough and I had WAY less books then. My collection has grown SO MUCH over the past two years (tripled maybe? shhh don’t tell the husband!) and it is going to need a lot of time and patience and muscle to get things packed and moved. Anyone have any tips or advice for moving books? I sure could use some! hehe

Random Thought of the Day:

I have an ereader (Kobo Touch) that I barely use. I won it through a contest, tried it out, and realized I wasn’t a huge fan of reading on it.. especially when the battery dies. No fun. There are so many reasons why I prefer a real book over an ereader: the look and feel of books, the fact that people can see what I am reading/it can become a conversation starter, and mostly the way they look all lined up on my bookshelves.

However

I really wanted to get my hands on Lola and the Boy Next Door and Isla and the Happily Ever After and didn’t want to wait for an opportunity to head over to the bookstore so I downloaded copies of both to read on my Kobo. And guess what I discovered? I actually read FASTER on an ereader than with a traditional book. What the heck is with that?! I guess I find it easier to read because it is lighter than an actual book and my hands do not tire as quickly. And maybe seeing my progress displayed as a percentage motivates me to hit 100% complete faster. Whatever the reason for it I am quite surprised by the fact that I get through books at a much faster pace. Interesting.

This monday I am going to talk about the book(s) I am currently reading + thoughts on them!

So.. I am still reading Lily-Josephine by Kate Saunders.

lj

I am having a hard time with it. It isn’t holding my attention or interest. The story is slightly confusing because it constantly jumps back and forth in time and there are quite a few characters who’s stories are being followed. It is also quite a mature book..which I didn’t see coming! Not that I have any issues with detailed sex scenes but it almost seems ill fitting in this book. I will try to get through it.. It may get better!

In the meantime, I added a second book to read (and hopefully bring back my reading mojo because Lily-Josephine is kind of killing it lol)

Think  Like A Freak by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner.

freak

I’m not that far in to this one yet but am loving it already!! I adored Freakonomics!! So I have very high expectations for this book. I hope it doesn’t disappoint.

What book(s) are you reading? Or what are you musing about this Monday?

I’m going to talk about my recent purchases from my trip! We (me + Husband & his parents) love to visit Prince Edward County every year for a week vacation in August. We go to relax by the beach, shop, hit up wineries, and eat lots of yummy food! There is this wonderful independent bookstore in Picton, Ontario that has some pretty good deals on books! This year I made out with some awesome Young Adult Books.

I picked up the following:

Legend by Marie Lu
Eon by Alison Goodman
Eona by Alison Goodman
The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey
Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
